Boksburg at a glance

The city of Boksburg falls within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on the East Rand of Gauteng, it was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, Willem Eduard Bok.

The city was established in 1887 after gold was first discovered there and was originally established to service the surrounding gold mines. Main Reef Road linked Boksburg to the other major mining towns.

Boksburg covers an area of approximately 162 square kilometres and is home to over 260 000 people.  The city boasts a well developed transport system including proximity to the OR Tambo International Airport, the largest airport in South Africa and is also well accessed via the Metrorail train system. Major road and freeways include the N12, N17, R21, R29 and R555

The city houses various shopping complexes, incluidng The East Rand Mall, The K90, the East rand Value Centre, Sunward Park Shopping Centre and The Towers.
