Sandton at a glance

"The richest square mile in Africa..." The city of Sandton is one of the most important  business and financial nodes in South Africa. It is here where you will find many of the countries largest corporates, and even some of the worlds top international companies. Surprisingly, the city of Sandton didn't even exist 50 years ago when it was still a large farming community.

The city was only proclaimed in July 1969 and only started progressing from a farming community in 1969 when Rapp and Maister begam developing Sandton City  in the early 70's and officially opened it's doors in 1974. There was a huge uptake in commercial space in the early 80's when it was more affordable to buy land there than it was in teh Johannesburg CBD and a more luxurious lifestyle was also more easily attainable. Council then only agreed to 200 000 square metres of commercial space, this number has since then grown to 1 500 000 square metres and is still increasing. It now boasts the second largest office district in South Africa, after the Johanesburg CBD. Sandton is also the peicentre of green building in Africa.

The city's name is a combination of two suburbs names - Sandown and Bryanston and covers 143 square kilometers and is home to 222 000 people.

The Sandton Convention Centre is one of the largest convention centres in Africa, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange also moved there from the Johannesburg CBD in the 1990's. Discovery are busy completing their new head office which will cover 87 000 sqm and will be occupied by 5 000 staff, Sasol have consolidated 22 offices into a new 67 000 sqm facility to house their 4 000 staff members.
